PANDEMIC FORCES UNLV ATHLETICS TO REDUCE WORK HOURS FOR 46 STAFF MEMBERS
UNLV Athletics announced today a reduction in work hours for 46 staff members due to the pandemic’s impact on live events and the postponement of fall sports.
With no ongoing events at the Thomas & Mack Center along with the closing of Sam Boyd Stadium, the 46 employees whose primary responsibilities involve live events or to coordinate travel, and their core functions do not directly impact the student-athlete experience or their well-being, will have their work hours reduced with an ability to retain benefits.
“The pandemic has created real financial challenges for UNLV Athletics and the Thomas & Mack Center and it is with deep regret that we have had to make these difficult decisions,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois. “We have worked diligently on a compassionate pathway that does not eliminate jobs.
“While mitigating our financial challenges our primary goals have been to protect student-athlete scholarships, sports programs and jobs to the best of our abilities. Our hope is to bring staff members back to full-time status once live events begin to return.”
The reductions have a projected savings of $1.2 million. UNLV Athletics cut 15 percent from its operating budget earlier this year and has not filled 15 vacant positions.
