With schools closed and kids home during this unprecedented and challenging time, UNLV Athletics has partnered with the Clark County School District to hold a virtual school assembly on Wednesday, May 6 at 2 p.m.

UNLV men’s basketball sophomore Marvin Coleman, a 2018 Foothill High School graduate, will moderate the panel, which is made up of Rebel student-athletes – all from Las Vegas and former CCSD student-athletes.

The panel will share their stories of perseverance to become Division I student-athletes, also discussing the importance of building good study habits, preparing for college, expanding horizons, how to be a good teammate and overcoming adversity among other topics. They will also share a congratulatory message to the high school graduation class of 2020.

“Sports can galvanize a community, while education expands horizons,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois. “Our student-athletes have some amazing and inspirational stories. Thank you to CCSD for their partnership on this initiative and we look forward to sharing the transformative power of sport with our young people throughout the valley.”

The virtual assembly will be accessible via UNLV Athletics’ YouTube page and feature:

  • Women’s soccer junior Jozee DeCunzo (Spring Valley High School, 2017)
  • Women’s basketball junior Bailey Thomas (Centennial High School, 2016)
  • Baseball junior Jack-Thomas Wold (Basic Academy, 2017)
  • Track & field/cross country junior Emma Wahlenmaier (Palo Verde High School, 2017)
  • Rebel Girls & Company junior Gage Johnson (Desert Oasis High School, 2017)
  • Cheer sophomore Lexi Buttars (Coronado High School, 2018)
  • Football senior Daniel Godfrey (Sierra Vista High School, 2016)

“While we are working with high school principals to ensure the accomplishments of our seniors are recognized and celebrated, it is amazing to see the community join us to support the Class of 2020 and send them onto their next endeavors with encouragement and sound advice,” said CCSD Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara. “Thank you UNLV Athletics, and congratulations to our outstanding graduates. When faced with adversity, they will rise.”

A total of 49 CCSD schools have been extended the opportunity to participate. Students will be able to ask questions through the chat feature on the YouTube page.
