Second-place UNLV has started Mountain West play 5-1, fans encouraged to wear black

After winning six of its last seven games and starting Mountain West play 5-1, the UNLV men’s basketball team will host New Mexico at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
The Runnin’ Rebels (10-9, 5-1) have won five straight at the Thomas & Mack Center. Saturday’s game will be a blackout with all fans being encouraged to wear black. 250 lucky fans in attendance will win a black UNLV jersey, and the athletics department is offering a “Break Game” special as students are still on winter break. A four-pack of tickets for that game are just $64 in the lower bowl. Junior guard Amauri Hardy leads four UNLV players averaging in double-figure scoring with 14.9 points per game (9th in MW), while junior forward Mbacke Diong is the team’s leading rebounder with 9.1 per contest (5th in MW). UNLV is under new leadership this year in head coach T.J. Otzelberger.
New Mexico (15-4, 4-2) is in its third year under head coach Paul Weir. The Lobos had won 10 of 11 games before falling at Colorado State, 105-72, on Wednesday. JaQuan Lyle leads the team in scoring with 16.9 ppg (5th in MW). Carlton Bragg was the leading rebounder (10.3 rpg), but he is no longer with the team. Lyle also leads the team and the conference in assists with 5.7 per game.
Saturday’s game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports Network with Andrew Catalon and Steve Lappas calling the action.
