UNLV (2-5) opened the 2019-20 season with an 86-71 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Nov. 5 then dropped three straight games vs. Power 5 conference teams (vs. Kansas State in OT, at Cal in OT and at UCLA) before getting back in the win column against Abilene Christian on Nov. 18. The Runnin’ Rebels have now dropped two straight games, both at home, to Texas State and SMU.
Junior guard Amauri Hardy leads three Runnin’ Rebels averaging in double-figure scoring with 18.0 points per game (3rd in MW), while junior forward Mbacke Diong is the team’s leading rebounder with 10.4 per contest (2nd in MW). In the Runnin’ Rebels’ last game, sophomore guard Bryce Hamilton scored a career-high 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting, including 4 of 6 on 3-pointers. UNLV is under new leadership this year in head coach T.J. Otzelberger.
Jackson State (1-5) lost five straight road games to open the season before recording its first victory of the year on Friday, 72-53, over Southern University at New Orleans, which was also its first home game of the year. Tristan Jarrett leads the team in scoring at 16.7 points per game, while Jayveous McKinnis also is in double figures in scoring with 12.0 ppg and leads the team in rebounding (8.5 rpg).
