REBEL SCHOLAR PATCH TO DEBUT SATURDAY WITH REBEL FOOTBALL

Designed by wide receiver Darren Woods Jr., the patch will be worn by UNLV student-athletes who earn 3.0 GPA or higher

UNLV student-athletes who achieve in the classroom will be awarded the Rebel Scholar Patch, debuting in the form of a helmet sticker this Saturday as UNLV football opens its season at USC.

The patch, which will be affixed to uniforms in other sports, will be awarded to student-athletes who earn at least a 3.0 semester grade point average or carry a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

This past spring, a design competition was held among Rebel student-athletes with the Athletics Department staff identifying top designs presented to the student-athletes for a vote. Junior wide receiver Darren Woods Jr.’s design was selected as the winner.

“We are extremely proud of our student-athletes for earning the first collective 3.0 semester GPA in UNLV Athletics history last fall and then for a second straight semester in the spring,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois. “Wearing the student-athlete designed Rebel Scholar Patch on game uniforms or helmets is a special honor and a new way for us to recognize academic achievement.”

A total of 258 UNLV student-athletes have earned the patch to date.

“This is an awesome way to recognize student-athletes who excel in the classroom,” said junior softball pitcher Breana Burke. “I’m proud to have the Rebel Scholar Patch on my jersey along with deserving teammates and fellow Rebels.”

Rebel Scholars must continue to earn a semester or cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 during the current academic year to keep the patch on their uniform or helmet for the following season.
