The UNLV men’s basketball team (14-5, 3-3 MW) will play its second consecutive road game for the first time this season as it travels to Fresno, California, to face Fresno State (14-6, 4-3) on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m.
This week is Coaches vs. Cancer Suits And Sneakers Week, which is a nationwide event when basketball coaches across the country unite for a common cause – saving lives from cancer. Coaches and their staff across the nation wear sneakers with their suits during games to raise awareness and help save lives from cancer by raising funds and encouraging people to educate themselves about cancer prevention, screening, and early detection.
The Runnin’ Rebels are 3-0 on the road in Mountain West play and are looking for their fifth straight road victory overall. UNLV is coming off a 79-74 comeback road win at Colorado State on Saturday, in which it scored the game’s final 14 points. It was the Runnin’ Rebels’ first victory in Fort Collins since 2011 and snapped a six-game road losing streak to the Rams.
UNLV went 11-2 during non-conference play this season with their only two losses coming in overtime – at Northern Iowa and vs. Arizona (now ranked No. 11/12) at home.
The Runnin’ Rebels are seventh in the country in field-goal percentage (51.0), eighth in scoring (87.4 ppg), 14th in rebounding (40.68 rpg) and 18th in assists (17.6 apg). Individually, junior forward Shakur Juiston and freshman forward Brandon McCoy rank in the top 24 in the country in rebounding. Juiston is 18th with 10.0 rpg, while McCoy is 24th with 9.7 rpg. UNLV is the only team in the nation with two top-24 rebounders. McCoy ranks 13th in double-doubles with 10, while Juiston is 33rd with eight. Senior guard Jordan Johnson is 17th in the nation in assists with 6.2 apg.
The 2017-18 season marks the second under head coach Marvin Menzies for the Runnin’ Rebels. Menzies and his staff brought in a recruiting class for this year that has been ranked as high as No. 12 in the country and features McCoy, who was a McDonald’s High School All-American, and Juiston, last year’s National Junior College Player of the Year. The Runnin’ Rebels also returned their leading scorer from last season – senior guard Jovan Mooring. Four Runnin’ Rebels are averaging double figures, led by McCoy’s 17.6 ppg, which ranks fifth in the Mountain West.
Tuesday’s game will be televised by CBS Sports Network with Rich Waltz and Dan Dickau calling the action. Jon Sandler and former Runnin’ Rebel Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM and online via the UNLV Gameday App and TuneIn (link at UNLVRebels.com).
