RUNNIN’ REBELS SIGN KRIS CLYBURN TO NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT
6-foot-6-inch guard from Ranger College in Texas will be a sophomore at UNLV
The UNLV men’s basketball program received a signed national letter of intent from Kris Clyburn this week, head coach Marvin Menzies announced Tuesday. Clyburn plans to enroll at UNLV this summer and will be a sophomore for the 2016-17 season.
A 6-foot-6-inch guard from Westland, Mich., Clyburn was a freshman this past season at Ranger (Community) College in Ranger, Texas, where he played for Coach Billy Gillispie.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Kris to the Rebel family,” Menzies said. “He is an excellent player and we are excited that someone with such a high level of talent was available this late in the process.
“Kris is a very efficient player, who has the ability to slash and score in multiple ways. He also has a very high basketball IQ.
In 38 games played at Ranger last season, Clyburn averaged 14.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals per contest, while shooting 59.9 percent from the field (191 of 319), 50.8 percent from 3-point range (32 of 63) and 77.4 percent from the free-throw line (130 of 168). The team had a 35-3 overall record, won the conference championship with a perfect 12-0 mark and lost in the NJCAA Championship Semifinals.
“Kris is an outstanding person, citizen and student,” said Rodney Heard, who is the associate head coach at Ranger. “He has a chance to be a great basketball player and can defend multiple positions.”
As a freshman, Clyburn earned his conference’s Defensive Player of the Year award. He was also named to the all-conference squad.
“Kris doesn’t need a lot of shots to be successful as you can see by looking at his stats,” Heard said. “He is a really good guard and has a chance to be great. UNLV fans will love him. Coach Gillispie did a great job preparing him for Division I basketball and is the reason he is the defender he is today. The best thing Kris did was allow Coach Gillispie to coach him and turn him into a great defender.”
Clyburn attended Romulus High School in Romulus, Mich., which in the Detroit Metro area. He earned all-state honors at the school, which has produced former NBA players Grant Long and Terry Mills, along with Kris’ brother Will Clyburn, who played at Iowa State and now plays professionally overseas.
