UNLV’S GARNESS SELECTED AS WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Las Vegas native helped Rebels earn four points on the road this weekend
Junior Richard Garness turned in one of the best two-game stretches of his career and was named the WAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping UNLV to four points over the weekend off a pair of road contests. He is now the third Rebel this season to be named Defensive Player of the Week, and its the first weekly honor in his career.
A native of Las Vegas (Arbor View HS), Garness recorded a career-high eight saves on the way to helping the Rebels post a 1-0 shutout at San Jose State on Oct. 9. That was followed by an Oct. 11 game at CSU Bakersfield, in which he faced 11 shots and allowed one goal over 110 minutes in the 1-1 double-overtime tie. He also finished with four saves against the Roadrunners.
For the season, Garness holds a 0.98 which ranks him fourth in the conference, and his is tied for second in the WAC with three complete shutouts.
The Rebels, 8-3-1, 2-1-1 in WAC play, returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 18, when they host Incarnate Word at 1 pm. Sunday will also be the team’s Breast Cancer Awareness game, and the Rebels will be wearing pink jerseys in support.
