The No. 24 UNLV men’s golf team will compete this week at The Goodwin, which will be held Thursday-Saturday, March 26-28, at Stanford Golf Course (par 70, 6,727 yards) in Stanford, Calif.
Originally named the United States Intercollegiate, the event was renamed The Goodwin prior to the 2014 edition in honor of former Stanford head coach Wally Goodwin.
The 24-team, 54-hole tournament will consist of 18 holes played each day beginning at 7:30 a.m. The field will be made up of No. 7 Stanford, No. 11 USC, No. 15 Oregon, No. 24 UNLV, Arizona, Boise State, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Loyola Marymount, Minnesota, Northwestern, Pepperdine, Princeton, USF, San Jose State, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, Southern Methodist, TCU, UAB, UC Davis and Washington State.
The Rebels’ lineup includes senior Kurt Kitayama, who was named Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week last week, freshman John Oda, senior Carl Jonson, freshman Ben Davis, senior Nicholas Maruri and freshman Sintaro Ban.
Stanford has won the last two team titles at the event, while also claiming medalist honors (Patrick Rodgers) last year. UNLV placed 12th at the 2014 event with Kitayama and Jonson leading the Rebels, both tying for 12th individually.
The Rebels are coming off a record-setting performance in their last tournament, which was a 17-stroke victory at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Primm, Nev. UNLV’s team score of 60-under-par was a program record for 54 holes and just three shots shy of the all-time NCAA mark. The 17-stroke margin ranked as the program’s sixth-largest in a victory in its history.
UNLV has won two team titles this year and has placed in the top three in five out of its eight total events this season.
