Opportunities & Job Training Available in Road Construction: Construction Trade Expo on March 26

One-Stop Career Center

Opportunities & Job Training Now Available in Road Construction Industry

Job seekers & Underemployed Invited to March 26 Construction Trade Expo

Upcoming road construction projects funded by the Fuel Revenue Index and other road construction projects throughout Southern Nevada will translate into new careers for thousands of Southern Nevadans, if they are adequately trained and prepared for those opportunities.

As part of its mission to narrow the skill gap and produce qualified employees who fulfill current and future employer needs, Workforce Connections’ One-Stop Career Center will host its first Construction Trade Expo on March 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“This is not a job fair,” said Kenadie Cobbin Richardson, One-Stop Career Center Business Services Manager.  “Rather, an opportunity to learn about apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs.  We need a skilled workforce to fill these upcoming jobs and our goal with the Expo is to expose people to new careers that can potentially double their current wage.”

Contractors, labor representatives and other employment and training partners will be on hand to speak with job seekers about upcoming career opportunities and begin the process to enroll qualified applicants in free training, pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs.

About the Fuel Revenue Index: The Clark County Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance in September 2013 that will index the fuel tax to inflation in Clark County, generating up to $700 million in bonding capacity. This revenue will fund 185 regionally and locally significant transportation projects throughout Southern Nevada and create thousands of jobs starting in spring 2014.  Indexing fuel revenues is the practice of tying the fuel tax to the rate of inflation to provide funds for transportation infrastructure projects. The Fuel tax is a common phrase describing the amount we all pay when we buy gas to fill-up our cars, busses and trucks. The ordinance went into effect Jan. 1, 2014 and will last through Dec. 31, 2016, resulting in an approximate three-cent increase per gallon of gas per year. As a result, the annual impact to an average driver in Southern Nevada equates to roughly a dime a day over the next three years.
