Mountain West grants relief of intra-conference transfer rule to Runnin’ Rebel senior guard

UNLV has received notification that the Mountain West Conference has granted relief of the penalties associated with its intra-conference transfer rule, making Runnin’ Rebel senior guard Kevin Olekaibe eligible to play in games immediately, including tonight’s exhibition vs. Adams State at the Thomas & Mack Center at 7 p.m.

UNLV learned on Monday that the NCAA approved a waiver granting Olekaibe relief from the mandatory one-year residency requirement.

“We are pleased for Kevin and his family that he will be able to play this year,” UNLV men’s basketball head coach Dave Rice said. “We also would like to thank Fresno State Athletics and Coach Rodney Terry for their support of Kevin and his family through this process.

“In addition, we are grateful to Eric Toliver, our associate athletics director for compliance, for his hard work on this waiver.”

Olekaibe transfered to UNLV from Fresno State, where he played for three years and scored a total of 1,169 career points. Last season he played in all 30 games for the Bulldogs, with 24 starts and averages of 8.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game
