The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in partnership with Art Production Fund, is pleased to announce artist-in-residence David Sanchez Burr.  During the course of his residency, David will convert P3Studio into an experimental sound and interactive sculptural installation called New Citadel.  Science fiction and futuristic architectural references found in literature and film are the main source of inspiration behind this work.

Designed to be ongoing and growing, spectators are invited to induce change throughout the installation by way of their movements and generated sounds.  Spectators become participants as they activate sensors that set the sculpture in motion, pick up and move parts of the work, and use instrumentation to make it take new shapes.  As a result, the citadel becomes a representation of the activity of the people within the space, an illustration of entropy, perpetual change and the conflict between maintenance and decay.

David Sanchez Burr is a mixed-media artist, currently living in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Born in Madrid, Spain, David began his experimental sound and visual work in Richmond, Va., while at Virginia Commonwealth University.  His current work is based on the study of a material’s physical response to natural and man-made processes such as decay, vibration, entropy and maintenance– the constructive and destructive forces that induce a constant state of change on our landscape.  In his artwork, David encourages the viewer to participate in this change and in so doing, become more aware of the regenerative systems and constant evolution taking place around us.  Through his work, David shows us that art doesn’t have to be static, frozen or preserved.  Instead, it can fall apart, break and fail as well as be reconstructed and reconfigured.

David’s research has been applied to performance, installation, sculpture, video and sound art.  Often site-specific, his work has recently been exhibited at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and The Present Company in New York.

The artist-in-residence program at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas represents one component of its larger art program, in which artists create projects that are interactive and participatory, giving guests the opportunity to connect at an authentic and personal level.  Developed and curated in partnership with Art Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, it strives to reach new audiences and expand awareness through contemporary art.
