UNLV’S KITAYAMA NAMED MW GOLFER OF THE WEEK

Rebels also selected as Golfweek’s Team of the Week after winning title at ASU Thunderbird Invitational

UNLV sophomore Kurt Kitayama has been selected as the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week for tournaments played April 5-7. It is the first time a UNLV player has earned the honor this season.

Kitayama helped lead the Rebels to their first team title, and fifth top-four finish, of the 2012-13 season this past weekend. The Rebels won the ASU Thunderbird Invitational after firing a final-round-low 7-under-par 277 to capture the crown by one shot over top-ranked California. The 18-team, 100-individual tournament was played at Karsten Golf Course (par 71, 7,013 yards) in Tempe, Ariz.

With the win, Golfweek named the Rebels as its Team of the Week.

Kitayama turned in a his best collegiate finish with a tie for fifth place at 6-under 207 (67-71-69). It was his second career top 10 finish. His 54-hole total of 207 also marked a career low.

Kitayama shot a career-best 67 during the first round by notching seven birdies and recorded his second tournament as a Rebel with two rounds in the 60s. He currently ranks 15th in the Mountain West with a 72.76 stroke average over 21 rounds.

UNLV will be back in action on Saturday at the Morris Williams Invitational in Austin, Texas.
