Photos/Recap: The Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada Celebrates Grand Opening

On Saturday, April 6, The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration for its new multi-million dollar Robert L. Forbuss Building, located at 401 S. Maryland Parkway in Downtown Las Vegas.

At the event, Mayor Carolyn Goodman read a proclamation naming Saturday, April 6 “The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada Day.”  Also on hand to say a few words in admiration of The Center and help cut the rainbow-colored ribbon were U.S. Rep. Dina Titus and Councilman Bob Coffin.  Many other local personalities showed up throughout the weekend, alongside nearly 1,000 members of the community, to show their support.

The celebration featured food and beverage offerings from The Center’s in-house dining establishment, Bronze Café, and a candy buffet by downtown neighbor Sweet Spot Candy Shop. Visitors toured the new facility and spoke with The Center’s staff and Board members about the new space and the organization’s plans for the future.

Purchased in Aug. 2011, the Robert L. Forbuss Building is 16,000 square feet on 1.1 acres of land in Downtown Las Vegas.  The contemporary space is energy efficient and includes an inviting 4,000 square foot courtyard with a basketball court, expansive library and cyber center, modern and comfortable furniture, delicious and affordable Bronze Café, multipurpose event hall and conference rooms, spacious youth room complete with a 75-inch 3D-capable television, pool table and computer area, and much more.

Last year, The Center assisted more than 36,000 individuals and plans to accommodate even more this year in its newer, more visible capacity with growing programs and services.
