Freshman earns her second straight honor

UNLV freshman Réjane Vérin continues to post new career performances each time out, and was recognized for her play in the final week of the regular season as she was named the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. It’s the second straight week that Vérin earned the honor, she is the first Lady Rebel freshman to be named more then once in a season and is the only freshman in the league to be named this season. She shared this week’s award with Chaundra Sewell from Wyoming.

Vérin, a 6-2 forward and native of Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, began the week with a record-setting performance in a 70-60 win at Boise State on March 6 that wrapped up the fourth seed for the Lady Rebels. She tied her career-high with 26 points and set a new conference freshman record with a career-high 19 rebounds, which is the most by any player in the league this year. For the night she connected on 10-of-22 from the floor while adding an assist, two blocks and a career-high tying four steals.

In a loss at Fresno State on March 9, she lead the Lady Rebels with another double-double performance, this time with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She knocked down 8-of-11 from the floor for 72.7% and was 6-of-9 at the line as well. For the week, she averaged 22 points, 16.5 rebounds, shot 54.5% (18-of-33), posted 2.5 steals, two assists and a steal per game. She now has five double-doubles on the year, all in the past 10 games.
