Description: Ninety years ago, brazen outlaws such as John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and George “Machine Gun” Kelly met their match with the rise of the FBI. Americans were captivated by headlines tracking the exploits of bank robbers and kidnappers, as well as the FBI’s efforts to catch them. During this time, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover transformed his mild-mannered investigative agency into a relentless gun-toting force determined to take down these “public enemies.” Inside the Museum’s historic courtroom, a panel of experts will delve into the stories and characters on both sides of the law.
Speakers:
- Ellen Poulsen is a researcher in the field of 1930s crime history. Her recent book “Chasing Dillinger: Police Captain Matt Leach, J. Edgar Hoover and the Rivalry to Capture Public Enemy No. 1” won her a second Independent Publisher Book Award. She has appeared on the Discovery Channel’s special “The Dillinger Conspiracy” and the History Channel’s “Crime Wave,” among numerous other documentaries.
- Joe Urschel is the former executive director of the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington D.C. He is also the former managing editor, senior correspondent and columnist for USA TODAY.
- As a child, Tony Stewart discovered his great aunt Beryl Hovious was married to John Dillinger. After interviewing Hovious, Stewart was inspired to write “Dillinger, The Hidden Truth – Reloaded.” For decades, Stewart continued to research Dillinger and other gangsters and authored more than 15 books and magazines on these topics. He’s also appeared in several documentaries, including “Making History – Rise of the Gangster” on the National Geographic Channel, “Crime Wave” on the History Channel” and “The Dillinger Conspiracy” on the Discovery Channel.
- Geoff Schumacher, vice president of exhibits and programs at The Mob Museum, will moderate the discussion.
Family Secrets with Frank Calabrese Jr.
Dates: Every Wednesday through Sunday in July
Time: At the top of the hour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Location: Organized Crime Today exhibit
Cost: Free with Museum admission.
Description: Reformed mobster Frank Calabrese Jr. had only ever hoped to escape the tumultuous and violent life he had been groomed for by his own father, notorious Chicago Outfit enforcer and hitman Frank Calabrese Sr. Knowing there was only one way out of the life – to ensure his father was never back on the street – Calabrese Jr. contacted the FBI from prison where he and his father were both serving multi-year sentences. To secure the evidence the FBI needed to charge and eventually convict Sr. for life, Calabrese Jr. agreed to wear a wire in the prison yard to capture intimate conversations with his dad. To further cement his father’s fate, Jr. convinced his uncle Nick Calabrese to also testify against Frank Sr. Nick’s testimony helped the FBI solve 18 murders, including that of enforcer Anthony Spilotro, whose death was depicted in Martin Scorsese’s 1995 movie “Casino.” Calabrese Jr. now appears weekly at The Mob Museum to speak and reflect on risking it all to escape the life he never asked to be a part of. Visitors are invited to join Calabrese Jr. Wednesdays-Sundays at The Mob Museum in Downtown Las Vegas, to hear his story of family, violence, addiction, greed and ultimately redemption. Calabrese Jr.’s telling of his life story leaves audiences stunned as he exemplifies the true cost of organized crime.
