The UNLV softball team hits the road to Northern California for a three-game Mountain West series against Fresno State. The Rebels will play on the road for the next two series, before heading home to wrap-up regular season play. UNLV is currently second in the MW standings.

SCOUTING FRESNO STATE: The Bulldogs head into the weekend series with a 28-14 overall record and are 8-5 in league play which is good for fourth in the standings. Fresno State just played a midweek non conference contest against No.20/24 Cal and dropped 4-3. The Bulldogs are led by Natalie Elias at the plate, who is batting .379 (55-for-145). Sophia Medellin is not too far behind hitting .360 (49-for-136) and has a team-high 6 HR, 12 2B and 37 RBI. Medellin leads the squad in slugging percentage (.596). In the circle for Fresno State, Taylor Gilmore leads the pitching staff with a 2.23 ERA. Gilmore has a 16-3 overall record in her 36 appearances this season.

LAST TIME ON THE FIELD: Last weekend, UNLV collected the MW series 2-1 against intrastate rival UNR. The Rebels took game one in extra innings fashion on a walk-off single, 8-7. The Wolf Pack earned game two in five innings, 13-0, to force a rubber match in the season finale. UNLV came back and held UNR scoreless for six straight innings to earn the series.
In game one, Sofia Morales drove in the game-winning run on an infield RBI single as the UNLV softball team defeated UNR 8-7 in extra innings on April 12. The Rebels and Wolf Pack went back-and-forth the entire seven innings as the two squads exchanged the lead six times and were tied four times. The Scarlet & Gray scored in five of the eight innings played including a three-run bottom of the third that put UNLV up by two runs, 5-3. The Rebels had 14 hits to score eight runs. Alanna Thiede earned her 15th win of the season. Morales was 3-for-5 at the plate including a RBI. Bowman went 3-for-4 on the day including a double and a RBI. Maddie Schmidt was 2-for-4 and Ariana Martinez was also 2-for-4. Eight different Rebels came across home plate today.
UNR took game two on April 13, in five innings, 13-0. The Rebels and Wolf Pack were scoreless for the first inning, but UNR took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning and stayed in control for the rest of the game. UNLV’s offense was held to one hit – a fourth-inning single from Ariana Martinez – in five innings, marking a season low, while it was just the third time this season the Rebels were held scoreless.
In the rubber match on April 14, UNLV earned a 7-3 victory over UNR to collect the series. The Rebels fell behind, 3-1, in the first inning to the Wolf Pack, but the Scarlet & Gray scored six runs in the next two innings and shut down UNR to earn the victory. Ellie Zellien and the defense held UNR scoreless for six straight innings after they scored at the beginning of the game. Zellien pitched her eighth complete game of the season to earn her seventh win.
NEXT UP: UNLV will continue on the road for its final MW road series visiting San Jose State for three-games beginning on Friday, April 26 and concluding on Sunday, April 28.
