The UNLV men’s basketball team will head back out on the road for a game at San Jose State on Saturday, Jan. 27. The 6 p.m. contest will be televised nationally on FS1.

 

RUNNIN’ REBEL LEADERS: Five UNLV (9-9, 2-4) players are averaging double figures in scoring this season in Kalib Boone (12.8 ppg), Luis Rodriguez (12.3 ppg), Dedan Thomas Jr. (11.6 ppg), Keylan Boone (11.2 ppg) and Jalen Hill (10.7 ppg). Rodriguez leads the team in rebounds (7.1 rpg, 6th in MW) and steals (1.9, 2nd in MW), Dedan Thomas Jr. is the assists leader (6.3 apg, 13th in nation), and Boone leads in field-goal percentage (62.6, 15th in nation) and blocks (1.6 bpg, 3rd in MW). Hill missed six games with a wrist injury and returned at San Diego State on Jan. 6, but left late in the first half in that game after suffering a knee injury, which an MRI later revealed to be a season-ending ACL tear.

 

ABOUT THE ROSTER: This season’s UNLV squad features seven returners from last year’s team along with seven newcomers. The newcomers are made up of three Division I transfers, a junior college transfer and three freshmen. UNLV has 10 upperclassmen, including five fifth-year seniors. A total of four players on the roster are playing in their hometown of Las Vegas. The Runnin’ Rebels return two starters in Luis Rodriguez and Justin Webster, who averaged 10.7 and 8.2 points per game last season, respectively. Rodriguez led last season’s team in rebounding (5.7 rpg).

 

ABOUT THE OPPONENT: San Jose State (8-11, 1-5) enters Saturday’s game having lost two straight: at Fresno State (85-82) on Jan. 16 and at home to New Mexico (95-75) on Wednesday. Prior to that the Spartans won at Air Force (70-67) on Jan. 13. Four SJSU players are averaging double figures in scoring, led by Myron Amey Jr.’s 15.7 ppg (8th in MW). Trey Anderson leads the team in rebounding (5.1 rpg), Alvaro Cardenas is the team’s assist leader (6.1 apg, 5th in MW), Amey Jr. leads in steals (1.6 spg, 7th in MW) and Adrame Diongue leads in blocks (1.8 bpg, 1st in MW). The Spartans are 5-4 at home this season. San Jose State ranks 31st in the country and No. 1 in the Mountain West in 3-pointers made per game at 9.4. Cardenas is 18th in the nation in assists per game and 15th in assist/turnover ratio (3.4). SJSU went 21-14 overall last season, including 10-8 in MW play to finish fifth. SJSU played in the College Basketball Invitational last season, falling to Radford in the event’s quarterfinals. Led by head coach Tim Miles, the Spartans have 10 underclassmen on their 16-man roster.
